The year 2025 is over! We, the board of the Strafrechtswinkel Amsterdam, would like to wish you a happy and prosperous 2026! The end of the year always calls for reflection on the past year.
In 2025, our team held 38 consultations; that's over 4,500 minutes of consultations in which we helped people with free legal advice. We also welcomed 13 new employees to our team. Finally, we held over 30 hearings last year, some of which were particularly impressive (see 'Protesting against deportation refugees').
We hope that in 2026 we can achieve the same excellent results as in 2025!

In July, two of our collegues assisted a client who had been fined for demonstrating on an airplane. The client was protesting the deportation of two Kurdish individuals who were unable to receive the necessary care outside the Netherlands. Because the client ignored the cabin crew's instructions to sit down and remain silent, she was given a €480 fine. During the hearing, our collegue argued that the client had no criminal record and that she intended to demonstrate legally in the future. Because a fine of €130 or more will result in a criminal record, our staff member requested that the fine be reduced to €129. In the event the judge disagreed, our collegue also requested that the fine be reduced to €240.
The judge imposed a €480 fine on the client, of which €240 was suspended. The judge took into account the client's clean criminal record, the fact that she has a low income as a student, and her intention to demonstrate legally in the future.
